5 First Thoughts: New Hasbro Star Wars Pics

August 31st, 2010

1. Yoda

Sure, Yoda’s supposed to be all “hard-core” with his lightsaber skills an’ all, but it’d still be nice to see a “cute” old-school Yoda on this cardback.

2. Jedi Luke

I know the figure is Luke from later in Jedi, but, still, without his cloak, the bubble looks a little empty.

3. Admiral Ackbar

I wonder how many people will want to get this figure based more on Ackbar’s Robot Chicken appearance rather than his role in Jedi.

4.  Darth Sideous

Not bad, but my favourite Palpatine is still the original POTF2 one.

5. Gamorrean Guard

This figure looks amazing.  Coming to toy aisles, Hasbro’s production of Honey, I Shrunk the Gamorrean.

MOC Review: Huffer (Power Core Combiners)

August 26th, 2010

Thanks to the wonderful folks at Hunter PR, I found a box packed with a couple of Transformers on my doorstep; one of them being Power Core Combiners Huffer (with Caliburst).

So, let’s take a look at the good, bad, and so-so of Huffer MOC.

Bounty Hunters: Bad or Just Sad?

August 23rd, 2010

Like a lot of Star Wars fans, I like me some bounty hunters.  They’re some of the coolest characters in the entire saga, but, the thing is, when you look at what they achieved, they’re basically rubbish.   Take the Fetts

The Fetts are generally regarded as the best bounty hunters in the galaxy, but we never saw Jango defeat anyone who actually defended themself and as soon as Boba was required to step up and do something other than look cool and let other people do the work for him, he ended up in a big hole; and not before he displayed his lack of prowess with a laser.  (Perhaps Vader’s admonition to Fett about “no disintegrations” had more to do with a clumsy history than an overly aggressive approach to his prey.  Kind of a Star Wars equivalent to “don’t eat the glue”.)

Click below for a rundown of bounty hunter feats and failures and let’s just see what this acclaimed group actually accomplished.  (And no, I didn’t include comics, novels, video games, or that time Boba Fett destroyed Optimus Prime in your backyard.  Just the movies.)

Kurtz and Star Wars

August 17th, 2010

Last week, the LA Times website posted an interview with Gary Kurtz where he discussed Star Wars and the “original” ending to Return of the Jedi.  (Short version: No second Death Star, Han dies, and Luke and Leia part ways.)

The article reminded me of a TheForce.net post from 1999.  The post recaps Kurtz’s appearance at a Sci-Fi Expo in Texas where he laid out the vision for nine movies (the Emperor didn’t show up until the last film).

5 on 5: The Hub Shows

August 16th, 2010

Transformers Prime

Movie-lookin’ characters.  Not story.  Good.

Delta Quest

Overused anime becoming generic; forgettable.

G.I. Joe: Renegades

Looks kinda sketchy to me.

The Twisted Whiskers Show

Not cat-fan, but liking ’stache.

Duke (G.I. Joe: Renegades)

Hair product first.  Cobra second.
